`Cottage Garden` - Middle Rasen, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire`
W.J.Boyes 1922
W. J. Boyes (1871- c.1930) was a watercolour artist from Bradford, Yorkshire who was most active in the first quarter of the 20th century. Many of his watercolours are of Wales or Devon and Cornwall. It is rare to find one depicting Lincolnshire. Boyes` watercolours are strong in colour and very decorative and thus are becoming sought after.
This delightful scene of Middle Rasen is an excellent example of its genre with a mother and daughter feeding the chickens in the cottage garden amidst a wealth of rural detail - the roses near the cottage, neat rows of vegetables and the interesting woodpile echoing the shapes of the thatched roofs. The painting is housed in its original gilt frame and mount.
