`The Lighthouse`
E.Haley c.1885
Atmospheric oil depicting a moonlit offshore lighthouse on a calm night. This is one of the old wooden early lighthouses probably dating to the early 19th century. You can just make out a flag flying from the top, presumably some kind of signalling device. Cleaning revealed a signature `E. Haley` lower left. Still undergoing research. Nicely painted and reminiscent of the work of Atkinson Grimshaw and other late Victorian paintings. On the evidence of the frame, which is the original, I would say late 19th century c.1885. Cleaned and revarnished - some light craquellure which is stable. Frame refinished in our usual satin gilt.
